On-line Single Scene

by

Oh, honey! Amber, come here, dear. Let me give you a hug. Was it because I wrote about you? I didn’t mean to put you and the City of Sugarland at a disadvantage. I thought you and Dr. Baldwin looked cute together. Just don’t listen to what the mean folks on the message boards are saying. Ok?

Well, in honor of one of our own re-joining the single scene after last night’s “Bachelor”, I decided to highlight the on-line scene for H-town singles.

The national sites are very well-known, thanks in part to an aggresive marketing campaign that features both television and radio ads. E-Harmony.com, Match.com and Yahoo Personals.com all boast large numbers of individuals looking for — well, something. Registration on these sites are all free, but sending or responding to e-mails from your “matches” will cost you anywhere from $35 - $60/month. Someone has to pay for all that marketing after all.

On both Match and yahoo Personals.com, queer, gay, lesbian and/or transgendered individuals can register and search for love, although E-Harmony has banned all gays and lesbians from the site. E-Harmony’s founder, Dr. Neil Clark Warren, created the site based on conservative, marriage-oriented Christian values. No “intimate-only” encounters allowed.

Since I primarily use free dating sites (because I’m thrifty and poor like that), I like Plenty of Fish. It is by far one of the rowdiest dating sites that I’ve ever tested the waters on. Last night, when I created a profile, I was in a playful mood and wrote a silly description of myself. Within an hour or so, I had 15 messages and many, many more people instant messaging my account. If you join, you might want to be prepared and come armed with multiple, recent photos of yourself.

The other free site in Houston that is widely used is Houston Connect.com. It’s part of the Houston Chronicle’s website and has one of the more thorough profile and photo album capabilities. Unfortunately, many of the folks on there are in relationships and maintain profiles to comment on the forums and the blogs. I haven’t had much luck from that site, especially since it takes 5 or 6 e-mails to different individuals get at least one response back.

Maybe it’s just me. Or maybe Houston Connect kind of sucks a little. If you’ve found love (or lust) on there. Let me know, I’m willing to retract my statements.

Well I truly see that your case is rather incisive as it highlights an assorted range of good data. Anyhow, was curious whether you would like to interchange links with my web space, as I am looking forward to generate more links to further amplify and get better web exposure for my web space. I do not mind you setting my links at the home page, just having this links on this particular page is good and sufficient. Anyway, please be kind enough to contact me at my site if you are keen in exchanging links with me, I would really like that. Best wishes from me and hope to get a reply from you as soon as possible!

About Houston, TX

Emerging from Houston's old oil town persona is a new "opportunity city" that prides itself on diversity, friendliness, and business and cultural offerings. Houston has all the perks of a big city - museums and galleries, major sports teams, corporate headquarters, and dishy local politics - mixed with a little bit of Southern charm. Where else will you find an artist that specializes in giant presidential busts, more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world, or a lovable muckraking TV reporter that loves to talk about slime in the ice machine? There's always something to see and do in Houston, and you'll read about all of it and more here.
